The Honey Bees

Biz and Buz are honey bees. Their friends Izz, Rizz, and Fizz live in the beehive with lots of other bees in a beautiful flower garden owned by a lady named Roz.

One sunny day, Roz planted some cuttings of lavender in her garden next to the pretty yellow sunflowers, golden marigolds and little blue pansies growing there. She knew that putting honey on the cuttings would make them grow big and strong. So, taking a small bowl from the kitchen filled with honey, she dipped each cutting in the honey and then planted it in the garden bed. But she forgot to take the honey bowl back to the kitchen.

The next day, Biz, Buz, Izz, Rizz, and Fizz were out in Roz’s flowerbed working to find nectar. The flowers were holding their heads up high because they had a lot of nectar and pollen to offer, and soon, the bees were buzzing about from flower to flower.

Suddenly, Biz and her friends smelled honey very close by, and looking around, they saw the forgotten honey bowl.

“Goodness me,” Biz said. “Roz has forgotten her honey bowl. I’ll just have a little taste to see if it’s still alright.”

But it was so good that she sat down and let the honey run all over her. Soon, she was joined by her friends. The honey was thick and creamy, and soon, they were covered in it. However, as the sun was going down, Biz realised that they should fly back to the hive. But they were well and truly stuck.

In the meantime, Buz, Izz, Rizz and Fizz had gathered lots of nectar (which was stored in their honey tummies) and lots of pollen, which was all over the hairs on their back legs.

“We’ll have to take this load back to the hive,” Buz said, and they all flew home. The day had ended, and Biz and her friends were not to be found. Buz became very worried, but there was nothing she could do but wait.

The next morning, Roz came to the flower bed and saw the honey bowl full of bees! So she carried the bowl over to her house and tipped the honey (plus the bees) out onto the back step. And do you know what happened next?

Buz appeared with Izz and Rizz and Fizz and they began licking the honey off all the sticky bees. It took a long time but at last they were all unstuck and able to fly back to the hive.

Roz was so pleased to see that they were all unstuck and buzzing about.

“I have learned a lot about bees today,” she said. “Not only do they work very hard, but they all know each other and are ready to help if needed. They are a true community. But I will make sure I do not leave the honey bowl out in the garden again.”

When the lavender cuttings grew up and came into flower with the sunflowers, marigolds and pansies, Biz and Buz and their friends were happy to live in such a beautiful flower garden made by Roz.
