Conductor Quibblet and His Magic Carpet
By Dan Castro

Outside my bedroom window, a scarlet carpet covered the lawn. On the carpet sat a light green rabbit with a white tummy. I’d never seen a green rabbit. But I’ve never seen one with sunglasses and a conductor’s cap, and this rabbit wore both.
The rabbit yelled, “All aboard!”
“You’re talking!” I said.
“Obviously. I’m Conductor Quibblet,” the rabbit said, saluting me. “Today’s destination options are Kampala, Quito, and Washington D.C.”
My best friend, Tanisha, was visiting Washington, D.C.! I ran outside and jumped on the carpet. “D.C., please!”
Quibblet flipped a lever from “Detectable” to “Undetectable”.
The carpet soared! I gasped, the ground dropping far below.
We zoomed to D.C.
Conductor Quibblet called out the sights.
“On your left, Washington Monument!” We shot past the white spire.
“White House below!” The President’s home zipped by.
“Lincoln Memorial. Lunch break!”
I easily spotted Tanisha’s mom. She always wears colourful dresses from her home country of Uganda. Near her stood Tanisha!
We landed. Quibblet hopped off and chomped on clover.
I shifted the carpet’s lever to “Detectable.”
“Hi, Tanisha!” I said.
Tanisha gasped.
Quibblet ran up. “No touching!”
He flipped the carpet’s lever. We roared off.
Minutes later, I was home.
“Next time, don’t touch the controls!” Quibblet said. He and his magic carpet flew away.
Next time?

Mom woke me. “Tanisha’s here.”
I had dreamt Quibblet.
Tanisha entered my room.
I smiled. “You’re back!”
Tanisha frowned. “Where’d you get a talking green rabbit?”
